LEWIS (LEW) STEELE - "THE CREEP"



The Creep played by Lewis Steele was a television horror movie host, who hosted horror movies from around 1970 until about 1982 in the following shows:
Creature Feature WNEW-TV Channel 5 from about 1970-1975 (first movie of triple-feature)
Son of Creature Feature WNEW-TV Channel 5 from about 1970-1975 (second movie of triple-feature)
Revenge of Creature Feature WNEW-TV Channel 5 from about 1970-1975 (third movie of triple-feature)
Creature Feature WNEW-TV Channel 5 from about 1980-1982.

Steele's only props were a dark jacket, sunglasses, and harsh studio lighting.

Lou Steele, the former actor whose voice later became familiar to New Yorkers as the announcer who first introduced Channel 5 News with, "It's 10 pm, do you know where your children are?" died 25 February 2001 of a heart attack at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey He was 72.
Steele started his radio career in his teens before heading to Hollywood at age 21. As a contract actor, he appeared in several films, including "The Furies" and "September Affair."

He was called into the Army during the Korean War and was assigned to Armed Forces Radio in Japan. Steele's was the voice that announced to the U.S. Army in Korea the removal of their commander, General Douglas MacArthur, by President Truman in November 1950.

Steele went back into radio after the war and moonlighted as a soap opera star on both "Guiding Light" and "Secret Storm." He was also well known for his role at Channel 5 as "The Creep," the host of the station's regular horror movie series, "Creature Feacture".

Steele is survived by his wife, Laura Steele (whose radio and television psychic career he helped develop), a son and a brother.

His horror host "image" was not having one. Tonight I present Lew Steele AKA The Creep, host of Creature Features on WNEW-TV Channel 5 in New York, NY. The actual air dates of the show are unknown; the show began in 1969 or 1970 and ended between 1973 and 1975. Lew Steele began his career as a contract actor in Hollywood before being called into military duty in Korea. He served in the army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan as an announcer on Armed Forces Radio. It was Steele who announced to the US Army stationed in Korea that General Douglas MacArthur had been relieved from his duties by President Harry S. Truman. After returned the war, he got back into radio as well as acting, later being called upon to portray The Creep for WNEW. It was Lew Steele as an announcer who first coined the phrase, "It's 10 pm, do you know where your children are?"



In 2014, Lewis Steele - "The Creep" for "Creature Feature", was inducted into "The Official Horror Host Hall of Fame".
