The movie outline from IMDB web site: " Danny DeVito is John Leary, a professional horror host "Al Gory"; whose wife's death in a car accident has left him to care for his two young boys. Loving, but useless at the daily job of fathering, the onus falls on plucky Jack the Bear (Robert J. Steinmiller, Jr.) Leary's conscience, and a quantity of alcohol, leads him to denounce a neo-fascist candidate on his children's television program, and also to the kidnapping of youngest son Dylan (Miko Hughes) by a disturbed neo-Nazi supporter". In this movie, John Leary's job is as the horror host "Al Gory" for the late night horror movie show: "Midnight Shriek", assisted by "Psycho Ward Cleaver", also played by John Leary. E-gors Chamber of TV Horror Hosts has the following information on the horrorhost side of the movie: " Midnight Shriek Fictional horror host in 1993 drama/comedy film Jack the Bear, starring Danny DeVito as a television performer trying to raise two sons in the early 70's after the tragic death of his wife. Midnight Shriek propably aired late nights (weekends?) on KCFG, Channel 3 (Oakland, California) around 1972-19?? NOTES: Al Gory specialized in ghastly black humor and tasteless stunts, much to the chagrin of his producer. John Leary's costume for the character included pasty white makeup, false (werewolf?) teeth, and a 40's-style hat. One supporting character, also played by John Leary, was "Psycho Ward Cleaver", whose forte was self-inflicting head wounds. Movies shown (clips from most used in film) included: Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Frankenstein Invasion of the Body Snatchers The Fly The Wolf Man Them."
