"Nightmare Theater" was a hosted horror movie show on KCPX, Channel 4 in Salt Lake City, Utah; with firstly Ron Ross as the unseen announcer. The show ran in the early 1960's, replaced by "The 10:15 Double Nightmare" (from about 1965-1966), and then "The 10:20 Double Nightmare" from about 1966 until the early 1970's); with Ross as the unseen announcer

for both shows.

In 1974, "Nightmare Theater" returned, with Ross as horror host "Dr. Volapuk", till about 1976. During the show's latest run, during this time KCPX was sold and the call letters were changed to KTVX.


From E-gor's Chamber of TV Horror Hosts, reader David Hall wrote: "As Dr. Volapuk, he wore a ghoul mask and a cape over a Dracula-like tux. The background was mostly dungeon-like, and the whole scene was lit with eerie lighting. Then to add to the cheesy effects, the contrast adjustments on the cameras were set too high, so there were lots of weird shadows and odd lights. Most of what he did for Nightmare Theater consisted of voice intros following commercials, and announcements of next week's shows. "


Ross was also known as "Engineer Ron" on "Engineer Ron with Ron Ross"; and Fireman Frank" on a show

of the same name. Ross was also the weather man on News 3, Las Vegas for seven years (till about 1985).

Sadly, Ross passed away on 23 November 2019.
