"Scream Theatre" was a hosted horror movie show with Cyrus Newitt as "Ashley Ghastly" presenting movies on Saturdays at midnight on WCSC-TV, Channel 5 Charleston, South Carolina in the late 1970's till the early 1980's? "Ashley Ghastly" was assisted by "Disco", a giant purple spider; and "Reginald" the bat. Ashley wore a top hat and had vampiric make-up. Every Halloween he would run a classics marathon, and run the old Universal titles. Carol Phillips played Swamp Woman for a time on in the early 1980's. Swamp Woman wore ore an Australian bushwhacker hat and was basically Ashley Ghastly's side kick. Merrick M? was a big time fan of the show. He was given a great opportunity of appearing on the show once as Ashley's cousin "Shalob" visiting from the old country. Portrait of "Ashley Ghastly" by Bradley Beard. Tonight I present Ashley Ghastly, host of Scream Theatre on WCSC-TV Channel 5 in Charleston, SC. The show ran through the late 1970's into the early 1980's. Ashley was portrayed by Cyrus Newitt, who later moved to New York in order to pursue his acting career. Ghastly's sidekicks were a large bat puppet named Reginald, who also wore a top hat, and a large purple spider puppet named Disco. According to fan recollection, it seems that Ashley made numerous public appearances and was extremely popular with the South Carolina youth. So popular in fact that he had a fan club called the Phantom Phan Club and members received a membership card signed by Ashley. No footage is known to exist of Ashley Ghastly's show, two Polaroid photos and a fan club card can be found on Egor's Chamber to TV Horror Hosts.
