SHOCKWATCH

GAYLORD - "FRED BRIGGS"

In 1959 Fred Briggs would become "Gaylord", host of the horror movie show "Shockwatch", screening on Saturday nights at 11:15pm on WSAZ-TV Channel 3 Huntington, West Virginia between 1959 and probably 1960.

"Shockwatch" replaced the non-hosted show "Nitewatch" on WSAZ-TV Channel 3.

From E-gors Chamber of TV Horror Hosts web page:
"Gaylord was a ghoulish figure with sunken black eyes in a craggy white face, dressed in black cape and top hat, named Gaylord, played by WSAZ news announcer Fred Briggs. His character was grimly sardonic and deliberately ghoulish. He played the keyboards and cracked bad puns with gravelly sincerity. His motto was "Have Casket, Will Travel!". In less than two years, Briggs left WSAZ; the station dropped "Shockwatch" after he departed".

When Briggs joined WBFF-TV, Channel 45 Baltimore Marylands, the opportunity arose for him to recreate his "Gaylord" persona by hosting horror movies in the early 1970's, with the name of the show not known.

There is no known footage from the show, and just a few photographs.

The below photograph is from Andy Moore - sent to E-gors Chamber of TV Horror Hosts. The photograph was taken at Camden Park (amusement park) Huntington, West Virginia in the summer of 1960.

A restored version of the above photograph.
