SON OF THRILL THEATER |
Al Penley played "What's His Face" (also known as "What's His Name") on a horror hosted show for KCAU out of Sioux City, Iowa. The program was called "Son of Thrill Theater", and ran from 1978-1980. "Thrill Theater" had been a popular radio show in the Siouxland area in the 1950s, and the title was a play on that. Penley's run as "What's His Face" was very popular at the time, and when he left Sioux City to work at another station, the show was greatly missed. Speaking in a Norweigian accent, "What's His Face" had long gray hair and gray mottled skin with a long nose, and he performed out of a casket in a tuxedo. He had a side character, Director Type Guy, who wore Groucho glasses and gave him grief about the show each week. Penley was a unique host with very smart, funny bumper skits, and he was warmly inclusive with fans of the show - occasionally reading fan letters from the kids. The show was much beloved. There are no known clips or photographs of "What's His Face" or his assistant. |
