MARK GATISS - "THE MAN IN BLACK"



"The Man in Black" (2009) was a radio anthology series; on BBC Radio 4 Extra, with Mark Gatiss reprising the title role as "The Man in Black". It ran for four series, each with five episodes, between 2009 and 2011.

Reruns of the 2009 version started to air on BBC Radio 4 Extra on 24 April 2020.


The original series from 1943, had Valentine Dyall's character as The Man in Black. The series ran 3 January 1988 until 16 October 1997.

The format comprised a dramatised horror story of approximately half an hour in length, introduced by a character known as the Man in Black. The plays themselves were a mixture of classic horror stories by writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, M. R. James and W. W. Jacobs, and commissioned stories by new or established writers.

Mark Gatiss is an accomplished author, actor and playwright.

He was part one of the award-winning comedy team "The League of Gentlemen" (1999),


and became heavily involved in the post-television Doctor Who (1963) scene, having written a variety of novels and audio plays, together with a string of short supernatural and science-fiction films. He also co-wrote three sketches for BBC2's "Doctor Who Night" in November 1999.

When Doctor Who (2005) was re-imagined by Russell T. Davies and returned to television, Gatiss became part of the writing team. He had another major success as the co-creator of Sherlock (2010) for the BBC with Steven Moffat and also stars in the series as Mycroft Holmes.

In 2010, he appeared as Cavor in the 2010 remark of H.G. Well's "First Men in the Moon".


He has co-written plays for the Edinburgh Festival (Scotland, United Kingdom) and appeared in a number of theatre and radio shows.
