THE OBJECT OF THE GAME:
The object of the game is to collect six different coloured "Keystones" and thus beat the host. For most games in the series, the "Gatekeeper" is the host but in the 2006 game and three expansions for the original one, other characters take the role of the host, introducing their own rules. To beat the host, the players must face their worst fear. If none of the players are able to win the game within the set time limit, the host is the winner.

A videotape, or in later games a DVD, is included with the game and acts as a game clock. The video stars the host of the game, who appears throughout the video giving instructions to the players. When a player has collected the Keystones, they may win the game by facing their earlier expressed "greatest fear", which is actually just a random event; if they are successful they win the game.

THE GAMES:

Nightmare (aka "Atmosfear") (1991) - "The Gatekeeper" played by Wenanty Nosul
Maureen Barkey (Dutch language version)
Philippe Charluet (French language version)
Uwe Karpa (German language version)

The game is set in a place known as "The Other Side". This place has six Harbingers, each of whom has authority over a Province. To play the game, each player adopts the persona of one of the Harbingers: Gevaudan the werewolf; Hellin the poltergeist; Khufu the mummy; Baron Samedi the zombie; Anne de Chantraine the witch, and Elizabeth Bathory the vampire. The final character in the game is the Gatekeeper, whose job is to ensure that the other characters do not escape from The Other Side.

Imprisoned in her own castle for her perverse crimes, she died at 64. Or did she? Now, it is not just a race against time but a game of sheer survival as this bat out of hell bares her teeth in the most challenging sequel in the "Nightmare" series. "Atmosfear: The Harbingers" (1995) - "The Gatekeeper" played by Wenanty Nosul
Maureen Barkey (Dutch language version)
Philippe Charluet (French language version)
Uwe Karpa (German language version)
Enrico Maria Tini Brunozzi (Italian language version)
Emile Gomez Manzano (Spanish language version)

The aim is to collect 6 different key stones and return to the hub, where you need to enter exactly at your own number. Then you should not draw your own piece of paper from "The Source of the Fear". The game uses a VHS video tape as a video clock giving the players one hour to complete the game, which is interrupted now and then by "The Gatekeeper" on the video, who says what the current user may or must do. This makes the game quick and stressful, as you want to conclude you turn as fast as possible, so you will not be the player affected by "The Gatekeeper".

This is an expansion VHS tape set for "Atmosfear: The Harbingers" game consisting of two 45 min. VHS tapes in a protective sleeve. Change the number of players by altering the number of keystones. The new tapes help increase re-playability of the game by providing fresh videos.

"Atmosfear: The Gatekeeper" (2004) - "The Gatekeeper" played by David Whitney and
Walter Jauernich (German language version)
Luca Bottale (Italian language version)
Enric Serra (Express overdub)

The aim of "Atmosfear: The Gatekeeper" is to collect a key from each of the six regions of the board before heading to the "Well of Fears" in the center and attempting to draw your fear from among those of your opponents in order to win the game. This must be done before 49 minutes pass, or all players lose automatically.

"Atmosfear: The Gatekeeper" uses a DVD that acts as a timer, constantly ticking away toward the end of the game. "The Gatekeeper" also frequently appears on screen and causes problems for any or all of the players. Just like its predecessor, "Atmosfear: The Gatekeeper" makes for stressful play, as players rush to take their turn and pass on the dice as quickly as possible before "The Gatekeeper" appears and calls on them. Unlike the original, the adaption to DVD means encounters with "The Gatekeeper" are randomized rather than in a fixed order, so you cannot predict when he will turn up next. It also means that new events can come up several plays on, although as with the original, in the long run, players may still become familiar with the possible events, leading to reduced replayability.

"Atmosfear: Khufu the Mummy" (2006) - "Khufu the Mummy" played by David Whitney.
"Atmosfear: Khufu - The Mummy" is an amplified experience in home entertainment. With its unique combination of board game and interactive DVD, this game of chance and skill is a race against time. Once you press play you only have 45 minutes to lay down all your scarabs then take on the Great Pharaoh himself in Khufu's ultimate challenge. Race around the board to collect treasures, and face the challenges in each of the four Chambers of the Great Pyramid, where fortunes are won and lost at the roll of the dice. With interactive game play, random selection that ensures a different game every time, and awesome atmospheric digital surround sound and picture, this speedy, spooky, spectacular DVD board game promises hours of fun and laughter for players 12 years and over.

"Atmosfear: The Gatekeeper" (2019) - "The Gatekeeper" played by Jacek Koman.
An update to the DVD board game "Atmosfear: The Gatekeeper" (2004). A continuation of the series of VHS and DVD Nightmare/Atmosfear board games. The aim of Atmosfear is to collect a key from each of the six regions of the board before heading to the "Well of Fears" in the centre and attempting to draw your fear from among those of your opponents in order to win the game. This must be done before the clock counts down to zero, or all players lose automatically. Like all previous games in the Nightmare/Atmosfear series, Atmosfear makes for stressful play. Players rush to take their turn and pass on the dice as quickly as possible before the Gatekeeper appears and calls on them, and are encouraged to work competitively against each other. "Atmosfear: The Gatekeeper" (2019) uses an App for apple and android devices; which acts as a timer, constantly ticking away toward the end of the game. It is also a channel for "The Gatekeeper", who frequently appears on screen and causes problems for any or all of the players. As in the previous DVD version, The Gatekeeper's appearances are randomised so you cannot predict when he will turn up next or what he will say. But unlike its predecessor, the game length is also randomised, varying between about 40 and 50 minutes. Where there was only one screen in all the previous versions, the App can run on multiple devices, so "The Gatekeeper" may sometimes pop on a player's own personal phone.
