"Are You Afraid of the Dark?" was a joint Canadian/US hosted horror/fantasy-themed anthology series. The original series was produced by the Canadian company CINAR and distributed by Nickelodeon. The show was filmed in Richmond, British Columbia and Montreal, Quebec. The episode "The Tale of the Twisted Claw" was aired as a pilot on the evening of 31 October 1990 in the USA and more than a year later in October 1991 in Canada. This episode would later be re-screened as episode 4, season 1 in 1992 (with new cast members for the bookends). "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" was aired from 15 August 1992 to 3 February 1996 on Nickelodeon's SNICK. "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" also aired on the Canadian television network YTV. The series would see a group of teenagers, known as The Midnight Society, who would meet around a campfire late at night. Usually, one teenager would introduce a story to the group. As a homage to The Twilight Zone, in which creator Rod Serling would, after introducing the episode, say "submitted for your approval", the story teller would also say "submitted for your approval [to The Midnight Society]". REVIVALS: There have been two revivals of the series, the first in 1999-2000 and in 2019-2022. NOVELS: Novels featuring members of "The Midnight Society" were released between March 1995 and January 1999; with further novels and graphic novels released from 2023.
