COMMANDER RETRO |
"Commander Retro" was a space themed children's hosted show with host Willard Scott as "Commander Retro", assisted by Luther as "Dr. Strangedog".
The show aired from 17 September 1966 until 24 February 1968 on Saturdays from 8:30am - 9:30am, broadcast in colour, broadcast from WRC-TV 4, Northwest Washington, Washington, USA.
The premise of the show: - The adventures of a physicist ("Dr. Strangedog"), who had been a German spy, stowed away on the rocket ship. He ate too many hotdog sausages, causing him to explode; and somehow turned into a dog! The rocket ship set had control panels made of plastic mini-ice cube trays with blinking Christmas lights behind them.
The show also featured the Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers movie serials.
Willard Herman Scott Jr. was born on 7 March 1934 in Alexandria, Virginia, USA; and passed away on 4 September 2021 in Delaplane, Virginia, USA. He was an American weather presenter, radio and television personality, actor, narrator, clown, comedian, and author, whose broadcast career spanned 68 years, 65 years with the NBC broadcast network. Scott was best known as a weather reporter on NBC's Today show where he also celebrated US centenarian birthdays and notable anniversaries. Scott was the creator and original performer of McDonald's mascot clown Ronald McDonald.
Scott had been married to Mary Ellen Dwyer form 7 August 1959 until her death on 28 October 2002, having two children - Mary Phillips Scott and Sally Woodruff Scott. He was later married to Paris Maguire Keena from 1 April 2014 until his death. |
