HUBERT A. BOWEN - "HUGHY THE GHOUL"



"Friday Fright Night" was a hosted horror movie series screening on KCMO-TV (1980-1983) / KCTV (1983-1988) Channel 5 in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. The off screen host was the voice of Hubert A. Bowen (Hugh) as "Hughy The Ghoul".


The show ran at 10:30pm Friday nights from 9 May 1980 until 1988. Hughy the Ghoul, with a creepy closed-mouth laugh, would introduce the movie, come back for commercial breaks and during the finale. Usually but not always, three movies were shown each Friday nights to early Saturday mornings. Hugh Bowen would become known as "The Voice of KCTV-5".

Hubert A. Bowen was born on 21 September 1917 in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa, USA. After graduating from the University of Iowa, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a lieutenant during WWII. Hugh Bowen settled in Kansas City, Missouri, and went to work as a radio and television announcer for 43-years at KCMO-TV Channel 5 which changed to KCTV in 1983. At the time of his death at his home on 7 August 1999, Bowen was known as "The Voice of KCTV-5".
