PAUL ZALOOM

Paul Zaloom was born on 14 December 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Zaloom is an American actor, puppeteer, writer and performance artist best known for portraying the eccentric scientist Beakman in the educational television series Beakman's World. He grew up in Garden City, New York, attended the Choate School in Connecticut and later studied at Goddard College in Vermont. While still a college student, he joined the Bread and Puppet Theater at the age of nineteen.

Zaloom began creating solo performances in 1978. His early production, The World of Plastic, transformed everyday objects, toys and discarded materials into characters and settings for satirical theatre. His subsequent work combined comedy and political commentary with puppetry, shadow theatre, overhead projections and illustrated storytelling. His solo productions have included Fruit of Zaloom, Sick But True and The Mother of All Enemies. He has performed at venues including Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

In 1992, Zaloom began starring in Beakman's World, which used comic performances and demonstrations to explain scientific concepts and answer viewers' questions. The series ran until 1997, and he subsequently brought the character to audiences through live science shows.

Zaloom also extended his puppetry work into filmmaking, including a pilot show called "Uncle Freaky's Creep Show". He co-conceived and co-wrote Dante's Inferno (2007), serving as its head puppeteer. The film used paper puppets and miniature theatrical sets to reinterpret Dante's journey through Hell in a contemporary urban setting. Alongside his performance work, he has taught workshops in puppetry and solo theatre in the United States and Europe. His honours include a 1996 Hewes Design Award from the American Theatre Wing.
