RICHARD JOHNSON - "BWANA JOHNNY"

"Creature Features" was a hosted horror movie show with Richard Johnson as "Bwana Johnny". The show aired on WCIX-TV Channel 6 an independent station broadcasting out of southern Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA. BWANA JOHNNY wearing his Pith Helmet The show was formatted as a Saturday afternoon children's show with a live audience, and opening sequence with the host wandering the streets of downtown Miami filmed in super fast motion. Bwana Johnny would be very active, interrupting and even inserting himself into the film with humorous dialogue to bizarre effect. In one show, right in the middle of the swamp levitation scene Bwana cuts into "Son of Dracula", saying "Cool! Let's run that again!", with Bwana running the scene backwards and then forwards again. RICHARD JOHNSON (BWANA JOHNNY) Richard Johnson (born 1946) of Eugene, Oregon, USA - known as "Bwana Johnny", was brought down to 790 WFUN in 1972 PD Tom Kenington, who knew him in Cincinnati when he was working at WUBE. Prior to WFUN, Bwana Johnny was doing afternoon drive on 970 WWDJ Hackensack, New Jersey opposite Dan Ingram on WABC. In Miami he did morning drive. His show was full of good humor and good music. He used a Don Imus duck to quack when he gave the time. The first time around, he was on for a year. It was said that he was fired and left to do a show in Seattle. Less than two years later, he was back on morning drive at WFUN with a new boss. Part of the time that he was working at WFUN he was doing a Saturday night hosting of "Creature Features" on Channel 6, WCIX-TV. He always wore his pith helmet and Aftrican explorer clothing. He kept certain props around such as binoculars and a fly swatter. Bwana died on 28 October 2005. Prior to Bwana, "Creature Features" was a hosted series with Arnie Warren from 1972 - 1973, and after Bwana "Creature Features" was a non-hosted series from 1976-1987.
